Pride of Shigar: Dr. Munawar earns doctorate in China

Dr. Munawar Abbas Shigri, son of Muhammad Nazir Shigri, Director of Education for the Baltistan region, has successfully defended his PhD in Biotechnology from Henan University of Technology, China.

He hails from Union Marapi, District Shigar, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), a region known for its breathtaking beauty, including Shigar Valley—home to K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, and other renowned landmarks.

Dr. Shigri comes from a humble background in this picturesque valley. He began his academic journey at USWA School Shigar and later completed his F.Sc. at USWA Cadet College Islamabad.

With unwavering consistency, resilience, and hard work, he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from GC University Faisalabad, followed by a Master’s in the same field from the same institution.

Motivated by an unquenchable thirst for education, Dr. Shigri made the bold decision to move abroad. On Monday, in Zhengzhou, China, he was officially awarded his prestigious doctoral degree.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Shigri shared that, although he faced numerous challenges during his student life, those very obstacles became the driving force behind his success.

He encouraged students from Gilgit-Baltistan to pursue higher education abroad, emphasizing that such steps are crucial for the region’s development. According to him, the youth of GB possess immense potential, but often lack proper guidance. He believes that with the right direction and a clear vision, students can access international scholarships and opportunities.

Dr. Munawar Abbas Shigri dedicated his remarkable achievement to his beloved father, acknowledging his unwavering support throughout his life. “Without him, I couldn’t even imagine this journey,” he said.
