NEPRA orders KE to end loadshedding in Karachi

29 May, 2025 21:41

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued strong directives to K-Electric (KE) to immediately implement corrective measures to enhance its operations and eliminate power outages in Karachi, ARY News reported.

This decision comes amid soaring temperatures in May 2025, during which several areas of Karachi have been facing prolonged load-shedding, with some reporting power cuts of up to 12 hours daily.

Responding to mounting public complaints, NEPRA has instructed KE to improve its performance and minimize outages, citing the negative impact of electricity cuts on both daily life and economic activities in Pakistan’s largest and industrially vital city.

The regulator has also emphasized the need for KE to boost its recovery rate and reduce technical and financial losses to maintain uninterrupted electricity supply.

Furthermore, penalties have been imposed on KE and other companies for “baseless load-shedding.” Reports suggest that KE is increasingly reliant on the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) while producing costly electricity from its own plants. NEPRA has criticized this dependency and warned that the failure to supply affordable power will no longer be tolerated.

NEPRA has mandated KE to submit a detailed report within seven days outlining the actions taken to curtail load-shedding.

Meanwhile, Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Leghari stated, “A review petition has been under preparation.” Speaking to the media, the minister added, “We are working to avoid adverse effect on the government and consumers.” He continued, “We will go to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to get appropriate power price for consumers.”

“Hopefully the NEPRA will will give decisions for the benefit of the country and the consumers,” he said.
