29 May, 2025 22:56

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, during his official visit to Tajikistan, called on the international community to hold India accountable for its actions since 7 May 2025, terming them as “acts of war” and violations of the UN Charter and international law.

The statement came during his meeting with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, where the Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s desire for peace while firmly stating, “Pakistan will defend its sovereignty with full resolve if challenged.” He stressed that the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions, is key to achieving lasting regional peace.

President Rahmon, expressing concern over the early May developments, stated that Tajikistan remains committed to regional peace and stability. He also praised PM Shehbaz’s leadership, saying he was “deeply impressed” by the Prime Minister’s role in restoring peace.

The two leaders held extensive talks on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, economy, defence, security, regional connectivity, and people-to-people ties. They agreed to expand collaboration in areas such as education, culture, IT, and investment.

Reviewing the CASA-1000 energy project, both leaders reaffirmed commitment to its timely completion. On economic matters, they emphasized activating all institutional frameworks, including 12 Joint Working Groups, particularly in oil, gas, and energy sectors.

Regional and international developments were also discussed, with PM Shehbaz congratulating President Rahmon on peacefully resolving the Tajik-Kyrgyz border dispute. Both leaders vowed to continue cooperation on platforms like the UN, OIC, SCO, and ECO.

Highlighting CPEC’s significance, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing connectivity with Central Asia. He also appreciated Tajikistan’s efforts in water diplomacy and successful hosting of the International High-Level Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation (ICGP).

The visit concluded with PM Shehbaz extending an official invitation to President Rahmon to visit Islamabad. The Tajik President hosted a special reception in the Prime Minister’s honor.
