Karachi Residents Protest Unannounced Load-Shedding, Block National Highway

31 May, 2025 17:14

Karachi is witnessing severe protests as residents rally against prolonged and unannounced power outages in several areas. Demonstrations that began last night have continued into the day, particularly on the National Highway from Malir Halt to Quaidabad, causing a complete suspension of traffic and immense inconvenience to commuters.

The protest, sparked by frustration over persistent electricity cuts, has brought normal life to a halt. Locals have taken to the streets in various neighborhoods, voicing anger over outages that stretch up to 16 hours daily.

“Protesters say that there is a severe electricity outage in Malir, Shadman Town, Quaidabad, Malir 15, Malir City, and the areas around Malir Court. The protesting citizens say that there is no electricity for up to 16 hours, leading to health problems, including heatstroke in the intense heat. Patients are suffering.”

Thousands of commuters on the National Highway remain stranded, while emergency services are also reportedly facing delays.

K-Electric, the city’s power provider, responded to the growing criticism by attributing the situation to electricity theft.

“K-Electric states that due to widespread illegal connections (kundas), areas with electricity theft are not exempt from load-shedding. In areas where billing is regular, electricity is not cut off.”

The ongoing protest highlights the urgent need for a sustainable solution to Karachi’s power crisis as public outrage continues to grow.
