Is Pakistan to raise electricity prices in July 2025?
Electricity Supply Schedule Issued for Muharram 2025
The Power Division has denied recent reports claiming that electricity prices will rise by Rs25 per unit from July 2025. These rumors spread just as the federal government is preparing to present the Budget for the fiscal year 2025-26.
Officials clarified that only the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has the authority to decide on any changes in electricity rates. Such decisions are made after reviewing official requests and holding public hearings.
No Ban on Second Electricity Meters
There were also rumors that the government had banned second electricity meters in homes. The Power Division called these reports false and misleading.
Authorities explained that second meters are still allowed in houses that have separate sections, kitchens, or entrances. This is permitted under NEPRA’s Consumer Services Manual 2021. Spreading fake news can lead to legal action under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
However, the government has launched a crackdown on the misuse of multiple meters. In cities like Faisalabad, some people have been installing several meters in one house to use subsidized electricity meant for low-usage consumers (less than 200 units per month).
Officials are now taking steps to stop this illegal practice and ensure fair use of subsidies.
The public is advised to ignore rumors and trust only official announcements from government departments.
