Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has announced a public holiday in the city on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in observance of the annual Urs of the revered Sufi saint, Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi (R.A).
According to an official notification issued by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), all offices operating under the KMC will remain closed on the day, corresponding to the 22nd of Zill-Hajj, 1446 A.H. However, departments engaged in essential services will continue to operate as usual.
The decision to declare the holiday is based on Council Resolution No. 594, approved by the City Council of Karachi on January 27, 2005. The Urs is commemorated each year with great devotion and traditional fervor, featuring religious gatherings such as qawwali and milad.
Thousands of devotees from across Karachi, interior Sindh, and other parts of the country travel to the saintβs shrine to participate in the Urs celebrations, reflecting their deep reverence and spiritual connection to Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi.
The saint, believed to have been born in 109 Hijri, is said to have arrived in Karachi during the rule of the Umayyad Dynasty in 1938 Hijri. He has since remained a significant spiritual figure in the region, with his shrine serving as a symbol of peace and devotion.
