Apna Meter Apni Reading App unveiled: Check More Details

23 June, 2025 15:24

In a major move to curb electricity overbilling, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the nationwide rollout of the ‘Apna Meter, Apni Reading’ scheme. The program aims to replace outdated manual meters with a digital billing system that empowers consumers to submit their own meter readings through a mobile application.

The initiative comes amid widespread public complaints over inflated bills, many of which are blamed on inaccurate or estimated readings by field staff. In a recent high-level meeting, the prime minister directed the Power Division to finalize a full implementation roadmap within 30 days.

Government officials say the digital system will not only increase billing transparency but also reduce administrative overheads and improve accountability.

“The new app-based method will ensure accurate meter readings and let consumers take charge of their own electricity usage data,” said an official involved in the project.

The mobile application, also named Apna Meter Apni Reading, will be available in five languages — English, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtu, and Balochi — to ensure accessibility across all provinces and regions of Pakistan.

The government believes the step will rebuild public trust in the power distribution system and reduce billing-related disputes.

“This is about putting control back in the hands of the people,” a ministry spokesperson said. “It’s a citizen-centric approach that blends technology with accountability.”

The scheme is part of broader reforms in the energy sector, where digital transformation is seen as key to improving services, reducing line losses, and fighting corruption.
