LHC rejects PTI founder's bail pleas in May 9 cases
The Lahore High Court has dismissed bail petitions filed by former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan in eight different cases linked to the violent events of May 9, 2023.
A two-member bench, led by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi, heard the case. Imran Khan’s lawyer, Barrister Salman Safdar, told the court that the charges were politically motivated.
He said that Khan was already in NAB custody at the time and didn’t know what was happening outside. He also added that Imran Khan had clearly condemned the violence and requested the court to grant post-arrest bail.
On the other hand, the prosecution argued that the May 9 violence was not random but part of a pre-planned conspiracy. They claimed that military sites were attacked under Imran Khan’s instructions and submitted evidence in court.
After listening to both sides, the court reserved its judgment and later announced the decision—rejecting Imran Khan’s bail in all eight cases.
These cases include the attacks on Jinnah House, Askari Tower, Shadman police station, and Rahat Bakery, as well as incidents involving the burning of a government vehicle near Jinnah House, arson at Sherpao Bridge, riots in Mughalpura, and violence outside Zaman Park.
