PMD shares earthquake update after multiple Karachi tremors
4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Swat and Surrounding Areas
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) is closely observing recent minor earthquakes in Karachi and nearby areas. Since June 1, 2025, the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad has recorded 57 low-magnitude tremors in the city.
These quakes have ranged between 1.5 and 3.8 on the Richter scale and are linked to movement along the Landhi Fault Line. Most of these tremors occurred at shallow depths of up to 70 kilometers, which is why many residents lightly felt them.
These earthquakes are due to natural tectonic activity. Karachi lies near the meeting point of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which often causes small tremors as stress is released from the Earth’s crust.
Experts say these small shakes are normal and do not signal a larger earthquake. Factors like soft soil, land reclamation, and unregulated underground water use may also affect how people feel the shaking on the surface.
So far, there is no sign of a major earthquake. However, like any earthquake-prone region, small tremors may continue from time to time. PMD is constantly checking data to watch for any unusual changes.
Officials stress that people should not panic. These small quakes are part of nature and happen often in active areas like Karachi.
The public is urged to stay calm, trust only official information from PMD, and avoid spreading unverified news. Sharing false predictions from non-scientific sources can lead to unnecessary fear and confusion. Always rely on trusted government updates to stay informed and safe.
