Sindh Government Imposes Pillion Riding Ban on Muharram 9, 10

Karachi, June 25, 2025 — The Sindh government has officially banned pillion riding across the province on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, as part of heightened security arrangements for the Islamic month.

A formal notification has been issued, confirming the restriction. The ban aims to prevent any law and order issues during the sensitive days of Ashura, which marks the 10th day of Muharram and holds deep religious significance.

Section 144 Enforced from 1st Muharram

In addition, the Sindh Home Department has imposed Section 144 throughout the province, effective from Muharram 1. This prohibits any kind of public gathering or procession without prior permission from authorities.

A separate notification has outlined the terms of Section 144, warning that violators will face legal action.

Moon Sighting Committee Meets on June 26

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will hold its key meeting in Quetta today (Thursday, June 26, 2025), to determine the sighting of the Muharram-ul-Haram crescent. The session will be led by Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, the committee’s chairman.

At the same time, Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committees will meet in their respective regions to collect moon sighting reports.

Muharram Crescent Expected Tonight

According to SUPARCO (Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), the new moon for Muharram 1447 AH was born on June 25 at 3:32 PM.

Experts believe the crescent will be visible this evening for about 75 minutes after sunset, especially along coastal areas.

If the moon is seen tonight, the Islamic New Year will begin tomorrow, June 27, 2025, making Ashura fall on July 6.
