Tarar Faces Slogans During Human Rights Debate

25 June, 2025 22:45

During a National Assembly session, opposition members staged a protest while Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar addressed the house. They shouted slogans like “chor chor” (thief, thief) in response to his remarks.

Tarar, speaking under the chairmanship of the Speaker, expressed disappointment that the debate on cut motions related to the Ministry of Human Rights had turned political. He said he had expected constructive suggestions, especially on human rights matters, but instead the opposition used the discussion to score political points.

He criticized the politicization of what he called an “innocent subject” and said the focus should have been on legislative measures introduced by the government. Tarar also clarified that standing committees are not responsible for granting bail or interfering in police investigations. He added that the Ministry of Human Rights only oversees a few commissions with limited roles.

Despite loud protests and chants like “liar, liar” from the opposition benches, the National Assembly approved five demands for grants totaling over Rs. 1.7435 billion for the Human Rights Division. The opposition had submitted 96 cut motions against specific budget allocations, but all were rejected by majority vote.

The session reflected the growing political tension in parliament, especially over sensitive issues such as human rights and budget spending. While the government defended its performance, the opposition continued to challenge its credibility.
