Muharram 2025: Mobile, internet service to remain suspended during Muharram?
Islamabad – The Interior Ministry of Pakistan has said that any decision to suspend mobile or internet services during Muharram will be made after consulting with the provinces and based on ground realities.
This statement came during a high-level meeting on the Muharram security plan, chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The meeting was attended by officials from all provinces, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad, including police chiefs and home secretaries.
Strict Action Against Hate Speech on Social Media
The Interior Minister also announced strict action against individuals spreading religious hatred on social media. The government has decided to monitor electronic and digital platforms closely during Muharram.
To stop the spread of hate content, PEMRA will be given clear recommendations. Special focus will be placed on social media surveillance to ensure that no one spreads content that can disturb peace.
Security Measures and Cooperation Across Provinces
The meeting agreed that all necessary administrative and security steps will be taken to ensure peace during Muharram. If needed, the decision to suspend internet or mobile services will be made in coordination with provincial governments.
Minister Mohsin Naqvi instructed that any service suspension must be based on the security environment and real-time threats, not taken as a general rule.
The federal government also promised full cooperation with all four provinces, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad to maintain law and order.
Modern Surveillance for Muharram Processions
To ensure safety, majalis and processions during Muharram will be monitored using modern technology. Authorities have been directed to strictly enforce the code of conduct.
No individual or group will be allowed to create unrest or provoke violence. Strict action will be taken against hate speech, inflammatory content, and those violating the peace.
