Smart Electricity Meters Installation Begins Across Pakistan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed relevant authorities to expedite the installation of smart electricity meters throughout Pakistan.
During a review meeting on ongoing power sector reforms, PM Shehbaz emphasized that these changes aim to provide relief to citizens and ensure consistent electricity supply for industrial growth. Federal Ministers Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Ahsan Khan Cheema, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Advisor Muhammad Ali, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, National Coordinator Power Task Force Lt. Gen. Zafar Iqbal, Coordinator Musharraf Zaidi, and other senior officials were in attendance.
In the meeting, the premier was briefed on the progress and advantages of reforms in the energy sector. He directed that the second and third phases of the auction for loss-making GENCOs be completed quickly. “The auction process should be televised live like other privatization efforts.”
He further urged the fast-tracking of the privatization of electricity distribution companies and instructed authorities to speed up the development of electric vehicle charging stations nationwide. Additionally, the Prime Minister called for immediate work on transmission and distribution improvement projects.
“The federal government has completed solarizing tube wells in Balochistan, which will help boost the province’s agriculture,” said PM Shehbaz.
Earlier this year, LESCO announced plans to replace over five million single-phase meters with smart ones to enhance efficiency and monitoring.
