Punjab starts work on pending number plates after 4 years

28 June, 2025 18:07

The Punjab government has finally approved the production of over 3 million pending number plates for vehicles and motorcycles, solving a problem that had remained unresolved for the last four years.

According to officials from the Excise Department, more than 1.9 million number plates have already been issued over the past two years through the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). Now, production of the remaining 1.1 million plates is set to begin.

Out of these, about 950,000 number plates will be made for motorcycles and 150,000 for cars. The rest will also be delivered to vehicle owners with help from NRTC.

Officials said that although the government had collected billions of rupees from citizens for number plates over the years, technical and administrative issues caused delays in production.

Due to many complaints, the government had stopped collecting number plate fees last April. During that time, people were allowed to get plates made from the open market, as long as they followed the official design.

With this new decision, the government plans to clear the backlog and ensure timely delivery of number plates to vehicle owners across Punjab.
