Pakistan Assumes UN Security Council Presidency, Calls for Peaceful Solutions

01 July, 2025 22:09

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asif Iftikhar, announced that Pakistan has taken over the presidency of the UN Security Council.

Speaking at a news briefing, Asif Iftikhar said Pakistan strongly supports peaceful solutions to global conflicts in line with the UN Charter.

He said Pakistan believes in dialogue, diplomacy, and mediation as the best ways to resolve international issues.

He also emphasized that Pakistan will use its role to promote peace and stability around the world.

Pakistan has taken over the Presidency of the United Nations (UN) Security Council for the month of July 2025, the Foreign Office announced on Tuesday.

The country assumes this responsibility with a profound sense of purpose, humility, and conviction. According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan’s approach will remain firmly rooted in the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, respect for international law, and a strong commitment to multilateralism.

As a consistent advocate for dialogue and diplomacy, Pakistan aims to bring an objective, principled, and balanced perspective to the Security Council. This outlook is shaped by Pakistan’s foreign policy, its past experiences on the Council, and its longstanding contributions to international peace and security, including participation in UN peacekeeping and peace-building missions.

In preparing the Security Council’s Programme of Work for July, Pakistan has adopted a transparent, balanced, and consultative approach. The country remains aware of the many interconnected challenges to global peace and security spanning the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and other regions. The significant human cost of these crises calls for a Security Council that is responsive, credible, and effective.

During its Presidency, Pakistan will encourage substantive, action-oriented discussions, ensuring inclusive engagement and fostering constructive dialogue on all agenda items. Pakistan is committed to acting as a bridge between the Security Council and the wider UN membership, guided by the principle that maintaining international peace and security is a collective responsibility.
