Five Pakistani Climbers Conquer Nanga Parbat; Two Reach Summit Without Oxygen

04 July, 2025 19:56

Five Pakistani mountaineers have successfully climbed the dangerous 8,126-meter Nanga Parbat within the last 24 hours. Among them, two climbers achieved this difficult feat without using supplemental oxygen, a rare accomplishment on this deadly peak.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan and other mountaineering sources confirmed that Dr. Rana Hassan Javed, Ali Hassan, Sohail Sakhi, Ashraf Sadpara, and Shehzad Karim reached the summit of Nanga Parbat, often called the “Killer Mountain” due to its tough conditions.

Ashraf Sadpara, son of the late famous climber Ali Raza Sadpara, completed the milestone by summiting all five of Pakistan’s 8,000-meter peaks. His climbs include K2 (three times), Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and now Nanga Parbat.

“This morning, Ashraf Sadpara reached the top of Nanga Parbat, completing his journey over Pakistan’s highest peaks. His courage, skill, and dedication inspire us all. Pakistan is proud of his achievements,” said Ayaz Ahmed Shigri from the Alpine Club of Pakistan.

Sohail Sakhi from Hunza reached the summit at 11 am local time without supplemental oxygen or Sherpa help. His expedition company, Moving Mountains, praised his success, calling it a “monumental achievement in Pakistani mountaineering.” Sohail had already climbed Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II (both without oxygen), and K2.

Dr. Rana Hassan Javed, a plastic surgeon based in Rawalpindi, also summited as part of an eight-member international team. This is his second 8,000-meter peak after Gasherbrum II in 2024. Fellow climber Naila Kiani praised his dedication, noting how he balances his medical career with mountaineering.

Ali Hassan, a high-altitude porter from Hushe Valley, and Shehzad Karim from Hunza also reached the summit on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Nanga Parbat is the world’s ninth-highest mountain. It is known for its extreme weather and high risk to climbers. All team members are now descending safely under close watch from their expedition groups.
