Pakistan observes 9th Muharram with religious reverence amid tight security

05 July, 2025 10:17

The 9th of Muharram is being solemnly observed across Pakistan today to remember the supreme sacrifices of the martyrs of Karbala. Mourners in various cities have taken part in mourning processions, noha khwani (lamentation), and religious prayers with deep spiritual devotion.

In Lahore, the main procession started from Pandu Street in Islampura. It is moving through Islampura Bazaar, Secretariat, and Old Anarkali, and is expected to conclude at Khema Sadat. Along the route, arrangements for namaz-e-zohrain and maghribain prayers have been made. Noha khwani is also taking place at key points.

To ensure safety, more than 10,000 security personnel have been deployed. These include police, Rangers, and elite forces. Surveillance cameras, walk-through gates, metal detectors, and snipers have been placed across the procession route.

In Karachi, the central procession began from Nishtar Park and will conclude at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah. Roads around MA Jinnah Road, Saddar, Empress Market, and Kharadar have been blocked with containers. All shops along the route have been closed.

To prevent any untoward incidents, mobile phone services have been suspended in sensitive areas. Bomb disposal squads, police, and Rangers are on high alert.

In Sukkur, the 500-year-old traditional procession in Rohri began early and will continue until the eve of Ashura. Due to security concerns, internet services have been temporarily suspended in several parts of the city.

In Multan, mourners gathered at Imam Bargah Mumtazabad for a procession of alam and tazia. In Faisalabad, the main procession is scheduled to begin at 9 PM from Imam Bargah Haidariyah, located in Aminpur Bazaar.

Cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Dera Ismail Khan are also observing similar mourning processions. Self-flagellation and noha khwani are common practices in all cities to mark the sorrowful day.

The entire country remains on high security alert ahead of Ashura, which will be observed tomorrow. Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with security officials and stay updated via official channels.
