Punjab seizes 13 lions in illegal ownership crackdown

05 July, 2025 18:04

In a major crackdown across Punjab, authorities have seized 13 lions kept illegally and arrested five people for violating wildlife laws.

The operation was launched after a shocking incident in Lahore, where a lion escaped from a farmhouse, jumped over a boundary wall, and injured a woman and children.

As part of the enforcement drive, officials inspected 22 locations on Saturday:

  • In Lahore, four lions were confiscated, and the premises were sealed. FIRs were filed against three people.

  • In Gujranwala, four lions were seized.

  • In Faisalabad, two lions were recovered and their enclosure was sealed.

  • In Multan, three lions were taken into custody, and one person was arrested.

Punjab’s Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb warned that keeping wild animals illegally is dangerous and unacceptable. “There will be no compromise on public security,” she said, urging citizens to report illegal possession of lions by calling helpline 1107.
