Lyari Building Collapse: 60-Hour Rescue Ends, 27 Dead as Crackdown on Unsafe Structures Begins
Karachi: The search and rescue operation in Karachi’s Lyari Bhagdadi area has officially ended after a 60-hour effort, following the collapse of a five-storey residential building on Friday. “The rescue operation continued for 60 hours and is now complete,” Assistant Commissioner Shehryar Habib confirmed while addressing reporters on Sunday.
Death Toll Reaches 27
The tragic incident has claimed 27 lives, with funeral rites already conducted for 20 victims. Rescue teams worked day and night to retrieve those trapped under the debris.
Crackdown on Unsafe Buildings
Authorities have now vowed strict action. “Operations against all buildings declared unfit in Lyari will begin from tomorrow,” Habib announced. He added that three adjacent buildings were also deemed dangerous, evacuated, and sealed to prevent further disaster.
Over 50 Dangerous Structures in South Karachi
The assistant commissioner revealed that more than 50 unsafe buildings have been identified across Karachi’s District South. “Residents evacuated from these structures are currently staying with relatives. Authorities are in the process of formulating a strategy to relocate residents of all unsafe buildings to safer accommodations,” he stated.
Recurring Tragedy in Karachi
This incident highlights the persistent issue of illegal and unsafe construction in Karachi, particularly in older neighborhoods like Lyari. Repeated tragedies point to the urgent need for regulatory enforcement and timely inspections to protect lives.
