Islamabad Court Suspends Ban on More YouTube Channels Amid Censorship Review

12 July, 2025 21:02

ISLAMABAD – A Sessions Court in Islamabad has temporarily lifted the ban on five more YouTube channels, raising the total number of unblocked channels to seven, as legal proceedings continue over a previous order to block 27 channels accused of spreading anti-state content.

The decision was made by Additional District and Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka during hearings on appeals challenging the July 9 order issued by Judicial Magistrate Abbas Shah. That order had directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to block the channels under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The FIA had launched an inquiry on June 2, claiming the channels were sharing content that threatened national security. However, the Sessions Court is now reviewing whether the blocking order followed due process and has requested a detailed response from the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency by July 21.

The temporary unblocking signals that the court is carefully considering freedom of expression and legal fairness, as public attention grows over digital censorship in Pakistan.
