Solar panel prices drop in Pakistan as net metering changes

Solar panel prices in Pakistan are dropping as the government introduces a new net metering policy. Under this policy, the buyback rate for extra electricity from rooftop solar systems has been reduced to Rs 10 per kilowatt-hour. This is part of a larger plan worth Rs4.3 trillion to overhaul the energy sector.

While this decision has caused concern for existing solar users—who were relying on higher buyback rates to recover their investment—it comes at a time when global solar panel prices are also falling. This means new customers can now install solar systems at more affordable rates.

Currently, the Trina 340W Half-Cut Poly panel is priced at around Rs10,000, making it a good option for smaller setups. Mid-range panels like Jinko 580W cost Rs18,560, Longi Hi-Mo 7 580W is Rs19,000, and Canadian N-Type 580W ranges between Rs19,250–19,500.

On the positive side, new customers will benefit from cheaper installation costs—even if the grid pays them less for their surplus electricity.

Pakistan, with a population of 242 million, has seen a rapid rise in rooftop solar installations in recent years. This trend was driven by rising electricity prices and attractive net-metering payouts. Imports of solar panels have crossed $2 billion annually, with about 48,000 MW worth of panels brought into the country. However, only around 6,000 MW is currently active due to efficiency issues.

This shift marks a new phase for Pakistan’s solar market, where lower panel prices may continue to make renewable energy an appealing option for many households.
