Deadly Honour Killing in Quetta
QUETTA — A couple, reportedly killed in the name of “honour” by a local tribal jirga in Degari near Quetta, was exhumed and autopsied by police surgeons from Sandeman Hospital. The post-mortems, conducted at the Degari coal mine graveyard, revealed the woman was shot seven times and the man nine times, confirmed Dr. Ayesha.
A viral video had shocked the nation—it showed men forcing the couple from a vehicle into the desert and shooting them at point-blank range. A case has been filed at the Hanna-Urak Police Station under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including murder (302), rioting (147, 148), unlawful assembly (149), and under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti said 11 suspects have been arrested and further raids are underway. He emphasized that none of the accused would be spared and revealed the victims were not married and each had multiple children. Bugti also noted the DSP in charge has been suspended.
The judicial magistrate ordered the woman’s grave to be exhumed, and the Balochistan High Court’s Chief Justice, Rozi Khan Barrech, has taken suo motu notice. He summoned senior officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary for Home and the IG Police. Political parties such as PPP, PML-N, PTI, and MQM have condemned the crime and called for strict punishment.
