Lahore set to get Pakistan’s first electric tram; Check routes & details
Check Lahore Electric Tram Routes & Fares
On Wednesday, July 24, 2025, news surfaced that the Punjab government is preparing to launch electric trams in Lahore. This initiative is part of the province’s broader plan to promote eco-friendly public transport and combat climate change.
Reports indicate that the government has already placed an order for the electric trams from China. Some local media outlets even claim that the first consignment has reached Pakistan. However, officials have not yet released an official statement to confirm the delivery.
According to sources, the pilot phase will begin in Lahore. Once the project is successfully tested, the tram system may expand to other cities including Gujranwala and Faisalabad.
The planned tram route in Lahore will likely run along Canal Road, starting from Thokar Niaz Baig and ending at Harbanspura or Jallo Park. The electric tram can carry up to 250 passengers at one time and is designed to travel 27 kilometers after just a 10-minute charge.
This project is expected to modernize public transport in Punjab. It follows the earlier launch of electric buses in Lahore, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif earlier this year. Those buses were equipped with features such as GPS, Wi-Fi, USB ports, and ramps for people with disabilities. They also had anti-slip flooring and CCTV cameras to enhance passenger safety.
To support the electric vehicle fleet, nine charging stations were established across Lahore. The buses are capable of covering 250 kilometers on a full charge. A digital wallet and card system is also in development to encourage cashless transactions for commuters.
With the addition of the electric tram, Punjab is moving toward a greener and smarter future. If successful, this initiative could set an example for other provinces in Pakistan.
