Punjab announces launch date for E-Taxi Scheme
The Punjab government is getting ready to launch its e-taxi scheme in August 2025. The Transport Department has completed all the preparations, and the scheme is almost ready to roll out.
As part of the project, 30 electric taxis will be reserved for women drivers to encourage their role in public transport.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said that an online portal is being developed with help from the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to make the application process easy for everyone.
A total of nine companies have been shortlisted to supply electric taxis. These vehicles will be available through easy, interest-free installments.
The full launch is expected to begin within two weeks. A detailed business and financial plan has also been created to make sure the project runs smoothly.
Under this pilot project, 1,100 e-taxis will be given to fleet owners, individual drivers, and ride-hailing companies. The Punjab government will pay for markup, token tax, and registration fees of the vehicles.
Out of the total taxis:
-
1,000 will go to fleet owners (each must buy at least 10 vehicles)
-
100 will be given to individual drivers, including 30 electric taxis for women
The selected companies will also be responsible for setting up service centers, spare parts stores, and charging stations across Punjab.
This project aims to promote clean transport and create more job opportunities in the province.
