Hotto Bridge Collapse Near Askole
Heavy floodwaters triggered by the melting of glacier ice from Baltoro Glacier, Pakistan’s largest glacier, have caused the destruction of the Hotto suspension bridge in Braldo Valley. This bridge was one of the most vital connections to Askole, K2 Base Camp, and the 8 adjacent villages.
The destruction of the bridge has resulted in both Local communities and international trekkers being stranded. There is now no road access to the region. Furthermore, Askole, which is a vital village for K2 expeditions, is now completely cut off.
The elderly, school going children and patients are among the local residents facing serious hardships. The crisis is endangering tourism, trading, and urgent health services.
The community chiefs and the residents have been complainting to the authorities to take urgent action to address the issues by reconstructing the bridge. They also warned the authorities that the postponement of action will not only risk more lives, but will also lead to more degredation to the economy of the region which is already under threat.
The authorities are being urged to take effective measures to reinstate the K2 Highway and assist the cut off populace before it is too late.
