How to Survive When a Car Is Caught in Floodwater – Safety Tips from Motorway Police

25 July, 2025 22:47

Due to floods and overflowing rivers or streams, vehicles can sometimes get caught in strong water currents. In such dangerous situations, your quick reaction and right decision can save your life.

According to safety guidelines from the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), one of the most common mistakes people make is trying to open the car door. But this should never be done.

The water pressure outside is extremely high, making it almost impossible to open the door. And even if it opens, more water will rush in, causing the car to sink faster.

What You Should Do Instead:

  • Immediately lower your window and exit the car.

  • If the window doesn’t open, remove the headrest from your seat.

  • Use the metal tips of the headrest to break the rear window.

  • Exit quickly through the rear window.

Why Rear Exit Is Safer:

The front of the car is heavier due to the engine, so it sinks first. The rear part stays above water for a short time—this is your escape window.

Final Advice:

In such emergencies, every second matters. A quick, calm, and correct response can be the difference between life and death.
