CJP introduces reform plan focus on faster justice, AI ethics

26 July, 2025 12:34

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi has announced a new plan to improve the country’s judicial system through the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee.

The plan includes setting up model criminal trial courts, establishing timelines for faster decision-making in civil and criminal cases, creating a professional excellence index for judges, and developing ethical guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the courts.

He shared these ideas during a national symposium held at the Federal Judicial Academy in Islamabad. The event brought together judges from higher and district courts, legal experts, and other important stakeholders.

Justice Afridi emphasized that reforms cannot succeed unless all stakeholders are involved. He highlighted the need to support judges, especially those at the district level, saying, “A judge who is institutionally supported is better able to be fair, focused, and effectively responsive.”

The reform plan also focuses on improving the wellbeing of judges. It aims to reduce outside pressure, improve hiring and promotion systems, make work conditions equal, and give judges chances for international learning.

Justice Afridi also shared that agreements will soon be signed with the Supreme Court of China and the Constitutional Court of Türkiye to exchange judicial officers and cooperate on legal matters.

At the end of the event, all participants agreed on the Islamabad Declaration on Judicial Wellbeing. The declaration stated that judges’ wellbeing is not a side issue, but a key part of a fair and effective justice system. It pointed out that stress, isolation, and heavy workloads affect judges’ performance and must be addressed.

The declaration called for including judicial wellbeing in all reform plans, better training and support, and creating a work culture that values empathy, teamwork, and care.

It urged all stakeholders and development partners to help build a National Judicial Wellbeing Framework to support a strong and responsive justice system.

Justice Afridi closed the event with a powerful message: “This day is not a tribute — it is a promise. You are not alone! The entire institution stands behind you.”
