Sugar Prices Soar, Govt Launches Strict Monitoring Drive

28 July, 2025 20:20

In response to the ongoing sugar crisis across the country, the federal government has taken a major step to control rising prices and shortages, according to national media reports.

Sugar prices have exceeded Rs. 200 per kilogram in several cities. Despite an earlier agreement between the government and sugar mills to fix ex-mill and retail prices, reports suggest the deal is not being followed.

A high-level meeting on the issue was chaired by Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, where strong concerns were raised over price hikes and violations by sugar mills.

To address the crisis, the government has decided to strictly monitor all sugar stocks held by mills. Authorities will ensure full implementation of the agreement, and strict action will be taken against those responsible for shortages or non-compliance.

“There will be no compromise on sugar prices and supply,” said Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain.

“We will take action daily to resolve issues, protect consumers, and support the industry.”

The government aims to stabilize sugar availability and prevent hoarding by enforcing tighter controls on mill operations.
