Government Cracks Down on Sugar Hoarding Across Pakistan

01 August, 2025 15:08

In a decisive move against rising inflation, the Pakistani government has launched a major crackdown on sugar hoarding, targeting what officials call an “exploitative cartel.”

Massive Seizure of Hoarded Sugar

Authorities raided various sugar mills nationwide and seized 1.9 million metric tons of hoarded sugar. The action comes amid growing public frustration over soaring sugar prices and alleged market manipulation.

Travel Ban on 18 Sugar Mill Owners

As part of the operation, 18 prominent sugar mill owners have been barred from leaving the country. Their names have been added to the Exit Control List (ECL) to ensure accountability.

Government Warns: “The Nation Will Not Be Held Hostage”

An official from the Ministry of National Food Security, speaking anonymously, emphasized, “We are not backing down. The nation will not be held hostage by profiteers.”

FBR and Tech Surveillance Deployed

To monitor stock movement, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has deployed officers inside sugar mills. Additionally, a track-and-trace system is now active to prevent illegal trade and uncover black-market activity.

Sugar Prices Skyrocket in Lahore

In Lahore, sugar prices have surged to Rs210 per kilogram, far above the government’s official rate of Rs173. Many supermarkets have stopped selling sugar, and small retailers say selling at official rates would lead to losses.

Public Demands Stronger Action

With inflation on the rise and basic commodities becoming unaffordable, the public is calling for stronger interventions to regulate prices and restore market balance.
