Sindh High Court Suspends Removal of KE CEO Moonis Alvi, Orders Penalty Deposit
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has suspended the decision of the Provincial Ombudsperson to remove Moonis Alvi from the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of K-Electric.
Moonis Alvi appeared before the court with his legal counsel and challenged the decision in a harassment case. The court suspended the Ombudsperson’s order and instructed Alvi to deposit the penalty amount with the court’s Nazir. Notices were also issued to the Provincial Ombudsperson and the complainant.
During the hearing, the court questioned the legal authority of the Provincial Ombudsperson. Alvi’s lawyer argued that federal law is applicable in Sindh and only the Federal Ombudsperson holds jurisdiction in such matters. He further contended that the penalty imposed was unlawful.
Justice Faisal Kamal Alam inquired about the flaw in the decision, to which the counsel reiterated that the case fell outside the Provincial Ombudsperson’s authority.
Previously, Provincial Ombudsperson Justice (R) Shah Nawaz Tariq had ordered Moonis Alvi’s removal and imposed a heavy fine after finding him guilty of harassing Mehreen Zahra, former Chief Marketing Officer of K-Electric.
The Ombudsperson stated that Alvi subjected Zahra to harassment and mental distress. He further directed that if the penalty is not paid, Alvi’s movable and immovable assets should be confiscated, and his identity card and passport blocked.
The complaint was filed by Mehreen Zahra, who was hired by K-Electric as a consultant in 2019.
