What to know about Karachi’s new camera-based ‘faceless e-challan system’

04 August, 2025 15:31

Karachi Traffic Police is set to replace manual road monitoring with an advanced camera-based traffic enforcement system, aiming to ensure better traffic discipline and reduce corruption. The new method is being introduced through an awareness campaign across the city.

Violations to Be Caught by Cameras, Not Constables

Instead of constables stopping motorists, high-definition cameras installed at key intersections will now automatically detect traffic violations such as speeding, signal jumping, and illegal parking.

The digital system, named TRACS (Traffic Regulation and Citation System), will issue e-challans based on photographic proof captured in real time.

E-Challans with Proof to Be Sent by Mail

“Drivers will receive their challans (e-tickets) by mail, along with a photo of the violation.” This ensures fair and transparent enforcement. A 50% discount will be offered if the fine is paid within 14 days.

Strict Penalties for Delayed Payments

If the challan remains unpaid for 21 days, the fine will double. After three months, the driver’s license will be suspended, and if unpaid for six months, the violator’s CNIC may be blocked.

Goal: Safer Roads, Less Corruption

Police officials say this “faceless” enforcement method will reduce on-road arguments and curb bribery, as fines will be based on timestamped visual evidence.

Authorities urge people to update their vehicle records and regularly check challan status to avoid penalties.

Public Advised to Follow Traffic Rules

The system is in the awareness phase, and no official launch date has been announced. Until then, “Police are asking the public to follow traffic rules strictly.”

The move aligns Karachi with global cities where AI and automated surveillance systems manage traffic more efficiently.
