Check Lahore Electric Tram Routes & Fares

09 August, 2025 17:58

Lahore is set to introduce its first-ever electric tram, marking another big step toward modernizing the city’s public transport after the rollout of electric buses in Punjab.

The project aims to give commuters a cleaner, faster, and more efficient travel option while helping reduce traffic pressure. The tram’s first route will run from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig, following the length of Canal Road.

To accommodate the system, underpasses on Canal Road will be converted to single lanes, and the Jail Road underpass will be relocated to enhance traffic flow. The tram will run on the far-left lane to avoid disrupting regular traffic, and road sections near stops will be widened for smoother boarding.

Authorities are also considering building an underground road between Jallo and Harbanspura to ease congestion further.

Imported from China, the modern battery-powered tram has three carriages and can travel 25–27 kilometers on a 10-minute charge. Each tram can carry around 250 passengers and offers subway-like service at street level without expensive underground construction.

The first tram was assembled at Ali Town Depot, with pilot testing done near Lahore Airport. In the trial phase, it will run as a free service to help passengers get familiar with it and gather feedback.

If the trial is successful, similar projects could be introduced in other cities, making Lahore a leader in eco-friendly public transport in Pakistan.
