Cyber Alert Issued for Ministries, Key Institutions Amid BlueLocker Ransomware Attacks
Pakistan’s critical ministries and government departments have been placed on high alert following revelations of widespread cyber attacks targeting national institutions. The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued a detailed advisory warning of BlueLocker ransomware threats that could lead to permanent data loss, disruption of business operations, and leakage of sensitive information.
According to the advisory, BlueLocker ransomware attacks are affecting Windows-based desktops, laptops, servers, networks, and cloud storage systems across various organizations. The malware spreads through trojanized downloads, phishing emails, unsecured file-sharing platforms, and compromised websites.
Official letters have been sent to the National Security Division, Establishment Division, Election Commission, and National Assembly. Other bodies such as NITB, PEMRA, NDMA, OGRA, and FBR have also been notified to strengthen their cyber defenses.
CERT emphasized the importance of implementing robust security measures for Windows computers, email systems, and web platforms. It advised against downloading files from unauthorized sources and warned users to avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments.
The advisory further explained that BlueLocker ransomware disables antivirus programs, locks files, demands ransom, and has the capability to spread rapidly throughout networks while stealing sensitive data.
To mitigate risks, CERT recommended maintaining offline and secure backups of critical data. It also urged organizations to provide immediate training for employees to identify and respond to cyber threats, including phishing attempts and malicious links.
The alert underscores the severity of cyber threats facing Pakistan’s government infrastructure and calls for heightened vigilance across all relevant departments.
