7 Volunteers Die Buried Under Debris Amid Landslide in Daninor Nala, Gilgit-Baltistan
Seven volunteers died after being buried under debris caused by a landslide in Danyore Nala, Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to the police, local volunteers were working to restore a water channel affected by floods when a mound of earth collapsed on them.
Hospital sources reported that due to the landslide, several people were buried under the debris and injured. Three of the injured are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
Rescue operations are ongoing by local residents, and emergency has been declared in hospitals.
A spokesperson for the provincial government stated that climate changes are at their peak in Gilgit-Baltistan, and the melting of glaciers has led to continuous devastating floods. After an increase in water flow from the Shishper Nala, the nala (stream) was flooded, causing severe damage to the lands of nearby settlements.
The spokesperson said that 7 people were killed and 7 injured due to the earth collapse in Danyore Nala, and rescue operations in the area have been completed.
He further added that agricultural lands have been damaged by the floods and trees have been uprooted. The floods have also affected the Karakoram Highway, causing the Hunza highway to close once again.
The provincial government spokesperson also mentioned that due to erosion of the Karakoram Highway, traffic to Hunza is being diverted via the Nagar road.
