PHC Halts Appointment of New Opposition Leaders in Parliament

12 August, 2025 18:16

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has ordered a stay on the appointment of new opposition leaders in the Senate and National Assembly.

A two-member bench of the Peshawar High Court comprising Justice Arshad Ali and Justice Khursheed Iqbal heard a petition against the de-notification of Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz by the Election Commission.

The court prevented the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairman of the Senate from appointing a new opposition leader in both houses.

The court also restrained the Election Commission from taking further action against Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz and adjourned further hearing on the petition until August 15.

It should be noted that a few days ago, the Anti-Terrorism Court convicted Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz in the May 9 cases, after which both members were disqualified.

PTI has lost the seat of opposition leader in both houses after the Election Commission disqualified both leaders.
