Field Marshal Asim Munir as Strategic Mediator
Islamabad – Pakistan–US relations have seen unexpected progress following the recent successful visit of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to the United States, the Financial Times reported.
According to the report, Field Marshal Munir attended the retirement ceremony of General Michael Kurilla in Florida, where he received a warm welcome. Prior to this, he also met with the US President.
The Financial Times stated that after his visit, the US granted Pakistan trade concessions, including a 19% tax rate, while India faced a heavy 50% tax. The US President also promised an agreement to develop Pakistan’s oil reserves.
Pakistan offered the US new investment opportunities, particularly in the energy, minerals, and cryptocurrency sectors. The country signed a memorandum of understanding with World Liberty Financial for crypto tokens, and Pakistan’s Minister for Crypto and Blockchain, Bilal Bin Saqib, took part in trade talks in Washington.
Senior fellow Michael Kugelman of the Asia Pacific Foundation called the developments “surprising,” while Marvin Weinbaum of the Middle East Institute noted that Pakistan is one of the few nations maintaining ties with China, Iran, Gulf states, parts of Russia, and now once again, the US.
The report added that India is unhappy with Pakistan’s reception at the White House, and tensions have reportedly grown between Narendra Modi and Donald Trump. Pakistan even positioned itself as a facilitator for a ceasefire proposal to the US President.
Additionally, Pakistan played a key role in capturing a senior ISIS terrorist. The US now views Field Marshal Munir as a potential strategic mediator in the region, according to the Financial Times.
