Tax Return Form 2025: How to File Taxes with FBR’s Simplified E-Return Form

20 August, 2025 14:46

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has officially rolled out the simplified electronic tax return form for the tax year 2025, aiming to make the filing process easier and more automated for individual taxpayers.

According to the notification, the form was finalized under SRO1561 of 2025 after a 40-day consultation period, which followed its draft release on July 7 for public feedback. While the form is currently available in English, the promised Urdu version is still awaited.

The new system introduces eight digital windows with a single input column each, offering a step-by-step, user-friendly experience. It also comes with auto-fill features, integrating details of purchases, assets, and tax deductions at source. For example, once an employer’s name is entered, deduction details appear automatically, while withholding taxes linked to a filer’s CNIC are also displayed. Bank accounts, registered purchases, and closing balances are auto-populated to minimize manual input.

The simplified return form applies mainly to salaried individuals with additional rental income and small businesses within a defined threshold. Those exceeding the threshold will be redirected to the standard system. Alongside this, the FBR has also issued simplified forms under SRO1562 of 2025 for salaried individuals, companies, AOPs, and professionals.

In a significant compliance step, FBR has made it mandatory for resident taxpayers with overseas assets to file an “Electronic Foreign Income and Assets Declaration”, disclosing foreign properties, businesses, bank accounts, and investments. Additional return forms have also been issued for non-residents, traders, SMEs, and manufacturers.

The income tax filing deadline remains September 30, with the FBR urging taxpayers to take advantage of the simplified system to ensure timely compliance.
