PTA Restores 80% Telecom Services in Karachi After Torrential Rains
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced that nearly 80 percent of the 2,400 Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) affected by recent heavy rains in Karachi have been restored. The torrential downpour earlier this week caused severe power outages and disrupted telecom and internet services across the city.
Flooding in low-lying areas made it difficult for telecom operators to maintain services, as many sites went offline despite backup systems like generators and batteries. According to PTA, restoration teams are working round the clock alongside operators to bring services back online, particularly in areas where floodwaters have receded.
“Telecom services are gradually returning to normal as water levels drop and access improves,” a PTA spokesperson stated. “We are focusing on critical zones to reconnect people with essential services.”
The heavy rainfall also impacted PTCL exchanges in various low-lying locations, resulting in intermittent internet disruptions nationwide. Since PTCL provides backbone connectivity to numerous internet service providers, cities including Lahore, Islamabad, and Peshawar also faced connectivity challenges.
Engineers are currently examining underground cable damage and exchange systems, while contingency measures have been activated to reroute traffic and stabilize services across the country.
