Punjab govt restores old pension for widows and daughters

21 August, 2025 17:47

The Punjab government has announced that widows and unmarried daughters of deceased government employees will once again receive a lifetime family pension.

A new notification confirms that the government has reinstated the old pension rules, bringing back the benefit that had been reduced last year. Under the 2024 amendment, family pensions were limited to 10 years after the employee’s death. Now, that restriction has been removed.

The notification also explained that if the deceased employee had more than one marriage, the family pension will be divided among all eligible beneficiaries according to official rules. Families have been asked to update their records with the relevant departments to avoid delays in pension payments.

Officials say this decision will give much-needed financial security to the families of deceased employees, especially widows and unmarried daughters who rely on this support.

Last year, the Ministry of Finance had tried to reform the pension system to reduce the rising pension bill, but those changes created concern among affected families.

By restoring the old rules, the Punjab government has shown that family welfare is a priority, ensuring that financial support for widows and daughters will continue for life.
