IK Nominates Allama Raja Nasir Abbas as Opposition Leader

26 August, 2025 19:01

Islamabad: In a major political development, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan (IK) has nominated founder of Majlis Wahdat Musmin (MWM) Pakistan and Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas as the new Opposition Leader in the Senate, party sources confirmed on Monday.

The nomination comes amid an intense political battle in the upper house of Parliament, where opposition parties are vying for influence against the ruling coalition. Imran Khan’s decision to put forward Allama Nasir Abbas signals PTI’s strategy to strengthen its position in the Senate by uniting allies and religious-political groups under a single leadership.

Party insiders revealed that the move aims to present a “strong and unified opposition voice” in the Senate. Allama Nasir Abbas, known for his religious and political influence, is expected to play a central role in opposing government legislation and highlighting issues such as inflation, governance, and rule of law.

This development comes at a time when the political landscape remains tense, with PTI facing multiple challenges including legal cases, restrictions on rallies, and parliamentary maneuvering. Analysts believe that Imran Khan’s choice of Nasir Abbas is not only symbolic but also a tactical step to broaden PTI’s alliances in Parliament.

The formal announcement and process of appointing the new Opposition Leader will follow Senate procedures in the coming days.
