Pakistan Customs Introduces AI Verification to Modernize Trade Operations

26 August, 2025 18:15

In an effort to modernize trade procedures and improve efficiency, Pakistan Customs has introduced AI-powered verification and assessment systems. The initiative aims to reduce delays, streamline operations, and provide traders with faster, more transparent services. Experts highlight that these reforms will not only support business growth but also strengthen revenue collection and curb smuggling.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed customs authorities to adopt international best practices and cut administrative hurdles in import and export operations. He stressed that “simplifying customs procedures will enhance business ease, attract investment, and support trade expansion,” making smooth implementation of these reforms a top government priority.

Key reforms include a faceless assessment mechanism and assigning independent officers to handle reassessment appeals, ensuring fairness and transparency. The use of AI-enabled scanners has already reduced cargo clearance times, while a new AI-based Risk Management System is expected to further boost efficiency and security. These steps have also helped reduce smuggling and illegal goods transportation, encouraging more businesses to adopt formal customs channels.

Officials further shared that strategic planning at ports is underway to accelerate cargo handling and ensure timely delivery of goods. The review meeting was chaired by the Prime Minister and attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and senior officials. The Prime Minister underscored the need for strong coordination among all institutions to ensure the successful execution of these reforms for Pakistan’s economic and trade growth.
