India Continues Indus Waters Treaty Violation by Releasing Water into Chenab

03 September, 2025 12:18

ISLAMABAD – Wednesday, September 3, 2025 – Pakistan has accused India of once again violating the Indus Waters Treaty by releasing water into the River Chenab without using the official channel of the Indus Water Commission.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, India informed Pakistan through diplomatic sources instead of the commission. A day earlier, India had also released water into the River Sutlej and Tawi.

Following the development, the ministry issued an emergency alert to all concerned institutions. Officials warned that the sudden release of water could cause an extremely high-level flood in the Chenab.

Pakistan’s Response

Federal Minister for Water Resources, Mian Moeen Wattoo, said India’s actions were damaging Pakistan’s agriculture and infrastructure. He stressed that India should provide timely information through the Indus Water Commission instead of last-minute notices via the Foreign Office.

“If proper advance notice is given, we can prepare and prevent damage. Sudden water releases cause irreparable loss,” the minister said.

Treaty Dispute

Pakistan maintains that India’s repeated violations undermine the Indus Waters Treaty, a landmark agreement signed in 1960 to share river waters. Wattoo added that the International Court of Arbitration has already supported Pakistan’s stance in earlier disputes.

He further said Pakistan could take the matter to the United Nations and would use every option available to protect its water rights.
