PDMA Issues High Flood Alert in Punjab as Sutlej River Swells
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a high-level flood alert after India warned Pakistan about rising water levels in the Sutlej River. Officials fear the situation could worsen in the coming days, posing a serious threat to low-lying areas.
The Indian High Commission informed Pakistan about flooding at Harike downstream and Ferozepur downstream, where water levels are dangerously high. Instead of using the Indus Water Commission, India sent the warning through diplomatic channels, which Pakistani officials criticized as a violation of the Indus Water Treaty.
Following India’s warning, PDMA Punjab has placed the civil administration, Army, and other departments on high alert. Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said the protection of citizens’ lives and property is the top priority, and emergency measures are already being taken in flood-prone districts.
PDMA reports show rising flows in Punjab’s rivers:
Chenab River: 115,000 to 331,000 cusecs at different headworks.
Ravi River: 73,000 to 144,000 cusecs.
Sutlej River: 142,000 to 319,000 cusecs.
Monsoon rains are expected to continue in Punjab until September 9, further increasing flood risks. Citizens have been advised to stay away from rivers and vulnerable areas.
Floods have already caused heavy damage across Punjab. Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed confirmed that 49 people have died due to drowning. More than 3,900 villages have been affected, and around 3.89 million people impacted. Authorities have shifted 1.83 million citizens to safer places through ongoing relief operations.
