Vegetable Prices Soar in Pakistan After Floods, Heavy Rains
Vegetable Prices in Pakistan
Flooding and recent rains have caused a sharp rise in vegetable prices across Pakistan, creating shortages in major cities.
In Islamabad, tomatoes have completely disappeared from cheap markets. Shopkeepers say tomatoes are being sold in wholesale markets at Rs. 300 per kg, while the official government rate is Rs. 123 per kg. Other vegetables like potatoes and onions have also become too costly for many citizens.
The situation is similar in Jhelum, where floods have badly damaged agricultural lands. Tomatoes, which were selling for Rs. 50 per kg just a week ago, are now priced at Rs. 220 per kg.
Traders at Sadar Sabzi Mandi report that vegetables such as potatoes, onions, cabbage, and bitter gourd are now 150% more expensive.
Citizens say daily essentials have gone out of reach and are urging authorities to take urgent steps to stabilize prices and improve supply.
