On the 60th Defence and Martyrs’ Day, Pakistan’s civilian and military leadership paid glowing homage to the country’s martyrs, ghazis, and resilient citizens whose sacrifices continue to safeguard the nation’s freedom and sovereignty.
The day, which coincided with Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH), began with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital. Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu led tributes to the heroes of 1965.
In a statement, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said, “On this historic day, our brave soldiers, with the support of the nation, stood like an insurmountable wall against blatant aggression… that a united nation can never be defeated.” The ISPR added that the courage of Pakistan’s fearless defenders will inspire generations, while reaffirming the armed forces’ pledge to provide relief to flood victims and deliver a “befitting and decisive response” to any threat.
President Asif Ali Zardari described September 6 as a “glorious chapter” in the nation’s history, highlighting the bravery of soldiers in both the 1965 war and the recent Operation “Bunyan-um-Marsoos.” He reiterated the government’s commitment to modernising defence capabilities, countering hybrid warfare, and upholding Pakistan’s principled stance on Kashmir and Palestine.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called September 6 “a symbol of courage, unity, and resilience,” praising the professionalism of the armed forces during both past and recent operations. He expressed solidarity with Kashmiris and Palestinians while urging the nation to rise above divisions to strengthen defence and achieve economic stability.
Both leaders paid heartfelt tribute to the families of martyrs and reaffirmed their vision of a united, strong, and prosperous Pakistan, echoing the timeless principles of faith, unity, and discipline.
