Flood Threat in Sindh: Kacha Area on Alert as High Flood Expected in Guddu Barrage
Guddu Barrage on the Indus River is bracing for a major flood surge today, raising fears of inundation in the riverine (Kacha) areas of Sindh.
According to irrigation officials, the inflow at Guddu Barrage has risen to 390,000 cusecs, creating a medium-level flood. Low-level floods are also being reported at Sukkur and Kotri barrages.
In Sehwan, authorities have urged residents of the river belt to evacuate. Provincial Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla assured that all preparations have been made to handle the situation. Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Syed Owais Qadir Shah, visited Sukkur Barrage and said that conditions would become clearer once the flood surge reaches Panjnad and Guddu. Officials further stated that reinforcement work is underway at weak points of protective embankments and confirmed that Sukkur Barrage itself faces no danger.
In Punjab, pressure on the Shershah flood embankment in Multan remains persistent. In Jhang, the Chenab River is in high flood with water flow reaching 488,000 cusecs, leaving several settlements surrounded by water.
Bahawalnagar has been severely affected, with 143 villages hit by floods and more than 100,000 people forced to relocate.
At Ganda Singh in the Sutlej River, water levels have dropped but a high-level flood continues. Meanwhile, in Kabirwala, a breach at the Mai Safuran embankment on the Ravi River has submerged 40 villages. Over 80,000 people have been displaced, while crops, homes, and even government buildings have sustained heavy damage.
