Karachi Port Soars 344 Spots to 61st in Global Rankings, Attracts US Trade Interest

10 September, 2025 14:48

In a major boost for Pakistanโ€™s maritime sector, Karachi Port has climbed dramatically in global port rankings, jumping from 405th to 61st position, officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs confirmed.

The announcement came during a visit by a US trade delegation, who were briefed on investment opportunities and infrastructure at Pakistanโ€™s key ports. The delegation expressed keen interest in investing across Pakistanโ€™s major maritime hubs.

The secretary of Maritime Affairs highlighted that โ€œKarachi Port handles approximately 54 percent of the countryโ€™s trade,โ€ underscoring its critical role in Pakistanโ€™s economy. He noted that improvements in port facilities have significantly contributed to Karachi Portโ€™s elevated global status.

The delegation also explored investment prospects at Port Qasim, including bulk and container cargo operations, off-dock terminals, coastal economic zones, LNG terminals, and a planned shipyard. These projects are part of Pakistanโ€™s larger strategy to strengthen maritime trade and industrial capacity.

Additionally, officials briefed the team on the strategic importance of Gwadar Port, along with opportunities in tourism and special economic zones linked to port infrastructure.

The US trade delegation showed substantial interest in all three major portsโ€”Karachi, Port Qasim, and Gwadarโ€”and discussed potential collaborations and investments for the future.

This engagement is seen as a positive indicator for international investor confidence in Pakistanโ€™s maritime sector and its expanding port infrastructure.
