Famous 1-Rupee Beggar Shaukat Beggar Dies in Road Accident
MULTAN — Shaukat Beggar, a well-known figure in Pakistan’s city of Multan who became famous for begging in English and asking only for 1 rupee, has died in a traffic accident. A video of him is now going viral on social media.
Shaukat was seriously injured in the accident and taken to the hospital but could not survive.
He became popular online for his unique style of begging and for openly sharing how much money he earned. In one viral video, he claimed to earn around Rs. 1,000 per day and said over Rs. 7.1 million had been deposited into his bank account through begging.
“I only ask for 1 rupee,” he said in the video. “Most people don’t have change, so they give 5 or 10 rupees. That’s how I collect 1,000 rupees a day.”
Shaukat lived in the Shah Jamal area of Multan and often posted bank receipts on social media as proof of his earnings. His videos made him an internet sensation. According to reports, he was even issued notices by Pakistan’s tax authority (FBR) due to the money in his account.
