Ex-MNA Jamshed Dasti jailed for 7 years in fake degree case

22 September, 2025 17:54

Former lawmaker Jamshed Dasti has been sentenced to seven years in jail for using a fake degree and forged documents. A local court gave the verdict after clear evidence of fraud was presented. The decision surprised many of his supporters and sent a strong message against dishonesty in politics.

The case started when the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) reviewed Dasti’s academic records earlier this year. Investigators found that he had submitted fake documents to contest elections.

On July 16, 2025, the ECP disqualified him from holding any public office. This disqualification led to a full criminal investigation, which later confirmed the forgery.

During the trial, prosecutors showed university records proving that the degree was fake. Witnesses also testified that the certificates Dasti used were not genuine.

His lawyers argued that the case was politically motivated, but the court rejected the claim. The judge said the evidence was solid and left no doubt.

The seven-year jail sentence is meant to protect the integrity of Pakistan’s political system. Authorities believe this punishment will discourage other politicians from using false documents.

Legal experts also noted that the verdict highlights the effort to enforce election laws and shows that no one is above the law.

Public opinion remains divided. Many people welcomed the judgment as a step toward clean politics, while others questioned the timing and possible political motives.

Still, the decision stands as a warning to all public representatives. The government has also promised stricter checks on educational documents in future elections.
