At UNGA, Trump says recognising Palestinian state rewards Hamas
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that America had seen “massive changes” since he began his second term. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, he claimed he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to make the world more peaceful, while also attacking climate change policies and migration.
Palestinian State Rejected
Trump dismissed the idea of a two-state solution, blaming Hamas for delays in the Gaza ceasefire. He said, “This would be a reward for (Hamas’s) horrible atrocities, including October 7, even while they refuse to release the hostages or accept a ceasefire.”
His remarks came just a day after France and other Western countries announced their recognition of a Palestinian state during a UNGA summit.
Meanwhile, a UN Commission of Inquiry reported that Israel was working to gain permanent control over Gaza and maintain a Jewish majority in the West Bank. The report accused Israel of systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure, saying that by July, Israel had extended control to 75% of Gaza.
Trump, ‘The Peacemaker’
Trump told world leaders, “I have ended seven wars,” claiming the US had saved thousands of lives, including in a conflict between Pakistan and India. He criticized the United Nations, saying, “what is the purpose” of the body if it cannot stop wars.
In a sarcastic tone, he added, “The UN has such tremendous potential. I’ve always said it — it has such tremendous, tremendous potential. But it’s not even coming close to living up to it,” even mocking a broken escalator at its New York headquarters.
Trump vowed that America would defend its sovereignty and highlighted that the US military was the most powerful in the world.
‘West’ Under Attack
He accused the UN of “funding an assault” on the West through migration, calling open borders a failed policy. “Your countries are going to hell,” he said, even taking a swipe at London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim leader of a Western capital.
Iran and Nuclear Weapons
Trump also warned about nuclear dangers. “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” he said, boasting about US military action.
“Three months ago, in Operation Midnight Hammer, seven American B2 bombers dropped 30,000 pound each bombs on Iran’s key nuclear facility, totally obliterating everything. No other country on Earth could have done what we did.”
